We reached the island well after sunset, swathed in a haze of salt air and fading light. The place was Two Harbors, a small outpost on the Catalina isthmus. We spent three days there, camping in canvas-walled cabins overlooking the cove. That first night we hiked along the bluffs under a black sky, looking down at the port lights reflecting off the water. Summer nights here are scented; coastal sage and native grasses, wild licorice, warmth and dust.
For this trip I did a little last-minute sewing. The Two Harbors Tote, a sturdy, drawstring, beach bag with rope handles for a bit of nautical flair. I found some coordinating fabric by chance, which resulted in the Seafarer Clutch — just the thing for ferry tickets and collected shells. I illustrated step-by-step instructions for both projects so you can see how I made them and maybe try them yourself. Click here or on the banner above to download.

They both look fantastic! I don't think I am talented enough to create something that looks so well made.
Hello,
I have looked and looked, because I didn't want to bother you, for the fabric you used on the tote, but I can't even find anything close. Would you mind sharing, possibly?
I thoroughly enjoy your blog, your aesthetic and photography. It has a quality few blogs are able to match.
Please, as time permits, keep it up.
Hi Suzy,
Thank you for your kind, kind comment! The fabric I used for the tote is called ticking; it's made of cotton and of a sturdy weight. You can usually spot it at chain fabric stores — I went to JoAnn Fabrics for mine, but depending on the store they may be in different areas. The store I usually go to keeps them on the end of an aisle near the fabric area with the muslin, while some other stores I've been to keep them near the decorator fabrics or near the canvas duck cloth. Just ask for "cotton ticking" and hopefully someone can point you in the right direction.
And of course I will continue blogging! Working full time has really diminished my rate of posts, but I love it too much to give it up.
Thanks again for the encouragement and good luck hunting down the fabric!

Can I point out a couple of errors in your instructions for the tote and clutch?
In Step One of the tote instructions, it says to baste two bottom circles together "right sides together." I believe you mean "wrong sides together."
Then, in Step Two for the clutch, it says to place the rectangles "wrong sides together" before sewing them, whereas I believe you mean "right sides together" in that case.
HI Livy,
I stumbled upon this post today and noticed your response to my post, which I had never seen. I was interested in where you obtained the fabric for the clutch. I continue to look for it as I have a nautical thing going on in my home and would love to use it for a project I have in mind.
I worked for Pottery Barn so do I know ticking! It's the other fabric that haunts me!
