I've been doing a little watercolor painting in spare moments, working my way through the birds of southern California. Eventually I hope to have enough paintings to design a custom field guide for my mother, who loves watching feathered visitors alight in the backyard trees.

A wonderful idea and incredible execution. Did you have the sheets printed with the name and leaf logo beforehand? What paper did you use? I would love to do this for our study room. Thanks for the great inspiration! xoxo

Hello everyone! - I wanted to stop in and answer your questions....
The paintings are done on plain watercolor paper (I have a Moleskine sketchbook with watercolor paper). I reference photographs of the birds that I find online and in some birdwatching books we have. After the paintings are complete I scan them and then put the finishing touches on in photoshop - like the text and the the leaf motif (which is a sketch of a fern I did a while s ago.
your watercolors are lovely, livy!
Gorgeous! I adore these little paintings. Well done! I am also a complete lover of birds, so seeing these precious little guys brightened my day! Have you heard of this artist who does amazing bird illustrations with watercolors? http://graceandivy.wordpress.com/2010/10/03/a-new-favorite-artist-geninne-d-zlatkis/

These are lovely - I'm also a watercolour painter, and I love this style!
Wow, what an artist! I am in awe everytime I go to your blog when you post something new. Amazing!!
Stunning! Looks exactly like the Winter Wren in our garden ;-)
oh these are amazing!
Ummm, I would be tempted to ALSO take those bird drawings and do a home scrapbook-cookbook with them (no recipes for fowl of course). I don't actually COOK a lot, but I love to combine my art work and recipes so that when I occasionally do get one out, I remember something I created.
But the book for your mother sounds like the top priority.
Lovely delicate work.
wanted to do paintings like this for a while
These are absolutely gorgeous.
i just love these! i adore birds :) really beautiful work!
These are exquisite!
Sweet and beautiful. They would look so pretty framed and hung in a grouping together.
What a lovely, lovely blog... found my way here from Pinterest. Gorgeous bird paintings - very reminiscent of old Audubon prints. Just beautiful! Deb
Whoa...inspiring.
How very beautiful! You may want to consider putting a credit watermark on your photos, or even just some initials. I am seeing the Carolina Wren painting on Pinterest without any source or credit.
Lovely, lovely work!!!!!
Found your work through Pinterest. So charming! You should put the bird collection into a book. I'd buy it in a
heartbeat! Beautiful.
