Since my grandpa has become ill, we spent part of August in New Jersey at the house he built when my dad was a boy. Its east facing windows look out on a backyard that saw the childhoods of eight children. At night the calls of crickets and katydids cut through humid air. It's a place that seems so little touched by change since I've known it. Our visits there have always been years apart, but somehow the details stayed with me better that way. My grandma's sewing room under the sloping gables, the smell of Pa's basement, the chestnut tree by the fence and the way the light in the kitchen feels golden.

a beautiful description of place, your time there may be bittersweet, just know we miss your posts!
I am so sorry to hear about your grandpa. My grandparents' old homestead was such a comfort to me during my childhood and I'm so glad for memories made there. Praying that you get to make many more with your grandpa!
What a wonderful place full of memories! :)
What a lovely picture you have painted in my mind. Sounds like a great place to be!
I am the same way, I can stay away from a place for years, and when I go back so many memories come flooding through all at once. I like memory places like that, when they never seem to change, even if we do.

All The Photo's On Your Blog Are So Lovely, Do YouTake/Edit Them Yourself? xx
Love the memories, I think this photo captures them perfectly.
I'm so sorry about your grandfather. My memories of my great-grandparent's home are so deeply embedded within me that I can still feel it and remember the smells of it when I think of them and that house even now several years after they passed away. It was hard to lose them, but they are such a part of who I am that they'll never really leave me completely.
You have a way with words. I could just imagine sitting under the gables with your grandma and made me think of the time mine brought us girls fabric scraps and grandpa brought fishing poles for the boys.
My wish is for your grandpa to regain his health and for serenity for you and your family during this time. A big virtual hug comes your way
what sweet sentiments. i hope your grandfather is feeling as well as can be and your family is all around you.
